Exploring English Wine with Knightor Winery
Knightor Winery is redefining the English wine scene with an approach that values innovation, accessibility, and authenticity. Founded by Adrian, a former IT entrepreneur, Knightor stands against the exclusivity that often surrounds wine culture. Instead of tradition dictating enjoyment, Adrian and his team believe wine should be approachable for everyone, regardless of expertise.
Nestled in St Austell, just a short distance from the Eden Project, Knightor operates with vineyards in Portscatho and Seaton. Alongside Head Winemaker David Brocklehurst, the winery’s young and passionate team focuses on breaking down barriers and creating a welcoming space where wine is enjoyed without pretension. “We are serious about what we do, but never pretentious. Wine should be fun, not intimidating,” Adrian says.
David shares this perspective. “There’s a lingering perception that wine has to be understood in hushed tones and strict rules. At Knightor, we challenge that. Our shop and tasting room are lively, working spaces where we label bottles, package orders, and welcome guests with open conversation. Wine can be unfamiliar, but we’re here to guide people toward something they’ll love.”
A Distinct Approach to Winemaking
The unpredictability of England’s climate means no two vintages are ever the same. David explains, “Unlike European vineyards where conditions are more stable, we deal with unpredictable weather - rain in June or September can change everything. Each year’s yield is different, so we don’t follow a rigid formula. Instead, we let the grapes dictate the wine.”
Knightor focuses on expressing the natural character of the fruit with minimal intervention. “Our goal is to showcase the purity of the grapes,” says David. The winery embraces small-batch experimentation, crafting unique styles while maintaining a core selection. Their sparkling wines are left to mature until they reach their signature bready, biscuity complexity, and all wines are free from unnecessary additives, making them vegan-friendly.
Adrian describes the resulting wines as delicate, fleeting, and expressive. “English wines have an elegance that some may never have experienced. For those new to it, we offer an introduction; for others, a rediscovery. Quality English wines are gaining momentum with both critics and consumers.”
David adds adds that, as a newer wine region, England enjoys creative freedom. “Unlike old-world vineyards that are bound by rules, we can experiment—grow different varieties, try new styles, and push boundaries.”
Exploring Vermouth: A Knightor Specialty
Beyond wine, Knightor has also made a name for itself in the world of vermouth. Carefully crafted using a base of English wine and infused with a selection of botanicals, their vermouths are a true reflection of the region’s landscape. By blending aromatic herbs, fruits, and spices, Knightor has created a range of vermouths that stand out for their depth and complexity. Whether enjoyed neat, in cocktails, or as an aperitif, these vermouths offer a fresh take on a classic drink, demonstrating the same commitment to quality and creativity that defines Knightor’s winemaking.
Beyond the Bottle: The Knightor Experience
Knightor is more than just a winery; it’s a destination. Visitors can take guided tours exploring the winemaking process, from vine to bottle, and enjoy tastings that provide insights into English wines. Whether opting for a casual tasting or a deeper experience, guests are encouraged to engage, ask questions, and develop preferences.
The winery also hosts feast nights and Foodie Fridays, featuring Cornish street food paired with Knightor’s wines. Live music during warmer months creates a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine.
Recently, Knightor introduced a lunch menu with seasonal, locally sourced dishes paired with their wines, allowing guests to dine in the rustic setting or the sunlit courtyard.
Knightor is also a popular venue for weddings and private events. The stunning backdrop, with vineyards and a rustic barn, provides a picturesque setting. Their team ensures personalised experiences, from wine pairings to locally inspired menus.
Adrian sums up the winery’s philosophy: “We let the fruit express itself, using a hands-off approach that results in fresh, vibrant wines.” Knightor is building a community, by welcoming all levels of wine lovers, they are shifting the perception of English wine from niche to noteworthy.
